Today, 1 December 2025, Romania celebrates its National Day (Ziua Națională).
Also known as Great Union Day (Ziua Marii Uniri), the date commemorates the historic moment in 1918 when Transylvania, Bessarabia, and Bukovina united in to the Kingdom of Romania, giving shape to the modern Romanian state.
Across the country, Romanian tricolour flags are displayed prominently on public buildings, in city squares, and during official ceremonies. The blue, yellow, and red symbolises ideals deeply rooted in the national identity of liberty, justice, and fraternity. These colours draw on the heraldic traditions of the Romanian principalities.
Marking this important annual occasion, Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Romania, HE Roberto Musneci KM, stated, “Romania’s National Day is a moment to honour the country’s history and to reflect on the values of unity and solidarity that have shaped it for more than a century. The Order of Malta stands alongside Romania in friendship and cooperation, and we join in prayer for the peace, well-being, and harmony of all communities across this nation. La mulți ani, România!”
