On Sunday, 30 August 2026, at the Church of Santo Redentore (Biserica Italiană “Preasfântul Mântuitor”) in Bucharest, HE Monsignor Giampiero Gloder, the Apostolic Nuncio to Romania, organised a Holy Mass for the repose of the soul of Blessed Pope John Paul I and to pray for his canonisation.

Blessed Pope John Paul I was beatified by Pope Francis in September 2022. Although his pontificate lasted only a short time, 33 days in total, his teachings left a profound spiritual legacy. In his apostolic messages, he addressed with clarity, inspiration, and theological rigour the virtues of faith, love, and hope.

The Holy Mass was concelebrated by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Bucharest, HE Aurel Percă, and the Archbishop Emeritus, HE Ioan Robu. The celebration also offered an opportunity to highlight the work of the Associazione Papa Giovanni Paolo I, which continues to support the cause of canonisation of the late Pope, together with members of his family who were present at the Holy Mass.

The Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Romania, HE Roberto Musneci KM, attended the Mass together with the Ambassador of Italy to Romania, HE Laura Aghilarre. At the conclusion of the celebration, Ambassador Musneci stated, “It was a moving experience to hear, through the homily of the Apostolic Nuncio, how the brief pontificate of Blessed Papa Luciani in 1978 helped to shape, through humility and closeness to the people, the life of the Church over the past nearly fifty years.”
