The Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Romania was honoured to be invited to the celebrations marking the 110th anniversary of the consecration of the Armenian Archbishopric Cathedral Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel in Bucharest, as well as the re-consecration of the cathedral following the completion of major restoration works. The ceremonies took place with the blessing of His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, at the initiative of His Holiness Bishop Datev Hagopian, Primate of the Armenian Diocese of Romania.
Held on 8 and 9 November 2025, the celebration included a concert, a solemn Holy Mass according to the Armenian Apostolic rite, and a reception hosted at the Patriarchate of the Romanian Orthodox Church. The Holy Mass, celebrated by H.H. Datev Hagopian, brought together representatives of nearly all Christian denominations in Romania. Attendees included the Apostolic Nuncio, H.E. Giampiero Gloder; the Metropolitan Archbishop of Bucharest, H.E. Aurel Percă; the Archbishop Emeritus, H.E. Ioan Robu; Bishops of the Romanian Orthodox Church; and senior representatives of Romanian state institutions.
During the ceremony, messages were delivered on behalf of His Holiness Karekin II, by Metropolitan Archbishop Aurel Percă; by Mr Ludovic Orban, Presidential Counsellor and former Prime Minister representing President Nicușor Dan; by Dragoș Hoțea, Secretary of State representing the Prime Minister; and by Mr Ciprian Olinici, Secretary of State for Religious Affairs.
At the conclusion of the celebration, Ambassador Roberto Musneci KM stated, “Armenia, in the history of Christianity, was the first country to declare itself Christian. The dialogue between the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Catholic Apostolic Church has always been intense, and we empathise with the sufferings endured by the Armenian Church and the Armenian people throughout their history. Our Embassy regularly shares our activities with His Holiness Datev Hagopian, and we are grateful for the invitation and for his personal courtesy.”
