In October 2025, Malteser International (MI)—the international relief agency of the Sovereign Order of Malta—conducted an Assessment Mission to Sudan to evaluate the humanitarian situation and identify potential areas for future engagement and assistance.
The mission marks the first operational activity of the Order of Malta in Sudan since the closure of its Embassy in Khartoum in 2022. The deployment reflects the Order’s continuing concern for the people of Sudan, who continue to suffer from the devastating effects of conflict, displacement, and lack of access to essential services.
The assessment team met with local people, Government authorities and ministries, local and international non-governmental organisations, representatives of international organisations, and the Catholic Church in Sudan, to evaluate needs in healthcare, water and sanitation, and humanitarian relief.
The Deputy Team Leader of the mission was James Michael Wilson KM, a Knight of the Romanian Association of the Sovereign Order of Malta (AROM), highlighting the continued contribution of the Romanian Association to the global humanitarian mission of the Order.
The Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Romania expresses its support and deep appreciation for the dedication of all those involved in this initiative, which embodies the Order’s enduring commitment to serving people in need—wherever the need arises, and without distinction of religion or background.
