The Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Romania participated in the annual commemorations marking International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, with particular focus on the Bucharest Pogrom of January 1941.
On 26 January 2026, the remembrance ceremony took place at the Coral Temple, Bucharest’s main synagogue. The event was organised and opened by the President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania, HE Silviu Vexler, and was attended by Cabinet Ministers, Presidential Advisers, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of major religious denominations, including the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, as well as the Mufti. During the ceremony, excerpts from documentary films were shown, illustrating the persecution suffered by the Jewish community during the Legionary violence of January 1941.
On 27 January 2026, further commemorations were held at the National Opera as part of the official Remembrance Day programme. On this occasion, a book written by Otto Fulop, one of the last surviving Romanian victims of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, was launched before the audience of public authorities, members of the wider public, and students of the Laude-Reut School, chaired by its President, Tova Ben Nun Cherbis. The Ambassador of Israel to Romania, HE Lior Azarben Dor, opened the discussion, reflecting on the book and on the universal significance of Remembrance Day.
At the conclusion of the commemorations, Ambassador Roberto Musneci KM stated, “The remembrance of the Holocaust calls us to confront the consequences of both hatred and indifference, and further reminds us to unite around its essential message: ‘Never Again’.”
