From 16 to 30 August 2025, the Romanian National Relief Corps of the Order of Malta (Serviciul de Ajutor Maltez din România / SAMR) deployed eight volunteers across two medical teams to Rome in support of the Jubilee celebrations.

Each team, composed of four trained volunteers and led by the SAMR Branch in Baia Mare, provided medical assistance to the many pilgrims attending the Holy Year events at the four Papal Basilicas: St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, the Arch-Basilica of St. John Lateran, the Basilica of St. Mary Major, and the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.

During the two weeks, the Order of Malta Romania teams conducted 81 medical operations over 28 work shifts across the four Holy sites, with a combined total of well over 3,000 volunteering hours.

While individual members of the Order of Malta Romania have contributed to the Jubilee, these two August missions marked the first full SAMR teams to be deployed for the occasion. In September, SAMR is scheduled to send another team to Rome.

This support reflects the Order’s long-standing commitment to assisting pilgrims and ensuring access to emergency medical care. Working in collaboration with other National Relief Corps and Associations of the Order, the Romanian volunteers offered their skills, energy, and dedication to the smooth running of this extraordinary moment of faith for the universal Church.

Speaking upon the teams’ return to Romania, the Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Romania, H.E. Roberto Musneci KM, said: “The participation of our volunteers in the Jubilee medical support once again underlines the active and high-profile role that the Order of Malta Romania is undertaking within the wider Order, and it is a reflection of our enduring commitment to serving those in need.”

The Ambassador added, “I wish to personally thank the Relief Corps volunteers and other Members who have travelled to Rome to support the Jubilee throughout the year, for their dedication and service to the Order’s charism.”
