Meeting with HE Victor Chirila, Ambassador of Moldavia to Romania
29/03/2022

Yesterday, 28 March 2022., a meeting was held between the Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Romania and Victor Chirilă, Ambassador of the Republic of Moldavia to Romania, at the Moldavian Embassy in Bucharest. Ambassador Musneci outlined the assistance programme the Order was providing to Ukrainian refugees and expressed his willingness to leave for the Moldova-Ukraine border this Wednesday in coordination with our Ambassador in Moldova, HE Peter Canisius Von Canisius. Ambassador Chirilă welcomed the news and expressed his intention to put Ambassador Musneci in touch with local authorities. The Moldovan Ambassador also reported that around 100,000 Ukrainian refugees had arrived in Moldova: ‘The number of children is impressive’. We then discussed Italian Relief’s commitment to providing them with necessities, paediatric and psychological support and anything else needed once priorities are identified following his visit to the border and the discussions with Ambassador Von Canisius. The possibility of welcoming refugees in Italy was also mentioned. Mr. Chirilă very much appreciated this news, as many of the current refugees remain in the border areas in the hope of returning to Ukraine as soon as possible; nevertheless, most of them are currently hosted by civilians: ‘more concrete European commitment is needed’. Among the European countries that have declared their readiness to take back the Ukrainian refugees currently settled in Moldova, he mentioned Germany, Bulgaria, Latvia and Lithuania. It also seems that for the time being, the north-eastern border is serene while the conflict extends fiercely to the city of Mykolaïv, Ukraine. Mr. Chirilă said, among other things, of the presence of a shuttle arriving in Palanca (Moldova) that sees many people arriving daily and which he, therefore, defined as the transition point of the ‘green corridor’. Finally, according to Ambassador Chirilă, initiatives for Ukrainian refugees could be synonymous with the enlargement of European integration. The two ambassadors shook hands and promised to meet again in the near future.
