June 2024 marked 777 years of the shared history between the people of Romania and the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta. To celebrate this milestone in history, the Order of Malta in Romania have put together a timeline to show some of the key dates in the Order’s relations with Romania.
The timeline below provides a summary of the shared history between Romania and the Order, starting from the Medieval period with an agreement between the Order and the Kingdom of Hungary covering parts of modern-day Romania; to 1932 when diplomatic relations were first formally established with the Romanian state; to the early 1990’s and the establishment and growth of the Serviciul de Ajutor Maltez in Romania – Order of Malta Relief Organisation in Romania (SAMR/Maltez); to 2002 with the first formal state visit to Romania; to 2022 and the launch of the humanitarian response to the full-scale war in Ukraine; right up to today.
