Following the visit of the President of the Republic of Malta, H.E. George Vella, to the Grand Master H.M.E.H. Fra’ John T. Dunlap, which has been widely reported on different sites of the Order, it is timely to publish a contribution from James Wilson on the history of this beautiful island with which the Order of Malta continues to have historical, spiritual and operational collaborations
The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta is a Roman Catholic religious order founded in 1099 in Jerusalem, by the Blessed Gerard. As such it is the world’s oldest surviving chivalric order.

Yesterday, The Grand Chancellor of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Riccardo Paternò di Montecupo, received the Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu, at the Magistral Palace.
The Sovereign Order of Malta is one of the oldest institutions of Western and Christian civilisation. A lay religious order of the Catholic Church since 1113 and a subject of international law, the Sovereign Order of Malta has diplomatic relations with over 100 states and the European Union, as well as permanent observer status at the United Nations. The Order is neutral, impartial, and apolitical.
